Motivation Moment Quote - Maya Angelou: If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou

How important is it to change your attitude? It seems like a little thing, but that one little choice will change your life (and ultimately change your world).

At 9:20 pm on April 12th, 2020, a tornado landed in our yard, knocking over all of our old-growth, extremely large hardwood trees, several landing in and through our house. We escaped without any injuries, but our house, possessions, and property were not so lucky.

The next morning, we hiked back into the location (because the driveway was covered with trees and cars couldn’t get through) to survey the damage. It was worse than we expected.

Over the next 14 months, we’ve gone through ups, downs, and throughs. It’s not always been a pleasant journey, but we have always found a way to find the positives even through the negatives. You have to be determined to keep looking until you find a reason and a way to dance through the rain.

We couldn’t change our circumstances. Believe me, we tried. What we could do was change our attitude about the circumstances we faced.

You can’t make people do what you want them to do. You can make circumstances line up the way you demand. All you can do is look at things with a new perspective that allows you to find your joy. You have to be determined to keep looking until you find a reason and a way to dance through the rain.

Is it possible to change your attitude?

You can change your attitude when you choose to see beyond the circumstances. If you react only to the circumstances, then you will struggle to change your attitude. You can’t always control your circumstances, but you can always decide your response to the circumstances beyond your control.

The girl decided to be brave and step on the Karaoke stage. She wanted to impress a guy (which isn’t always the best reason but can be a powerful motive). The rival girl waited until she stumbled over the first few sentences and then pulled the plug to the music.

Circumstances ended the music, but the girl determined not to let the circumstances be the end. She continued to sing and encouraged the audience to sing along with her.

She started scared, faced a horrifying moment for someone who was already scared and determined to keep going. It not only changed her attitude but changed her focus. Instead of worrying about the guy, she found she simply enjoyed herself. Nothing changes your attitude about circumstances faster than finding your way to enjoy the journey.

Okay, that happened in a movie, but still, isn’t all good fiction based in reality at least a little?

We can learn from this movie scene. You can let the circumstances dictated what you are going to do, or you can choose to do what you want. When you choose, you set your attitude.

You can change your attitude, but only when you make the choice to see over, around, or through the circumstances.

Steps for Changing Your Attitude

  1. Take a breath. Panic never provides a venue for a positive attitude adjustment.
  2. Remember it will end. No matter how bad it gets, there is another side. Keep focusing on the other side.
  3. Find others to boost you up. It’s tough choosing positive when others are harping on the “woe is you” circumstances. Find positive people and invest your time around them. Positive will give life to positive.
  4. Pour over positive infusing words, songs, shows, or books. Whatever makes you happy, made time in your schedule to get a little of that happy. The harder your attitude and the more adjustment required, the more positive infusing you will need.

Ultimately, you have to make the choice to change your attitude. Change a big adjustment. Even a little positive can make a difference because it starts the flow to more positive changes.

The question isn’t “can you change your attitude.” The question is “WILL YOU?”

How do I improve my attitude?

“You are what you eat.” That’s what we’ve been promised. It’s true that if you eat enough carrots, your skin will take on an orange tint. Food is meant for fuel, and if you fuel your body with enough wrong things, it will show up physically.

On the inside, things aren’t much different. What you put into your eyes and your ears will be what settles into your heart. Your heart words will direct your attitude.

In other words, what you watch, read, hear, and experience today will directly affect your tomorrow, so you have to make the choices now to being improving your attitude for tomorrow.

Tips for Improving Tomorrow

  1. Change your sight – look at things from different perspectives. Not only can a new view change your attitude, but it can also allow you to see new opportunities or new ways to get things done.

You are the director of your journey. The actions you take and the choices you make will determine not only where you go but how you go. If you want to have a different life, don’t wait for the circumstances to align with your desires. Instead, make the choices for changing your attitude, and you will change your world.

Do you want to change your world? Are you willing to do what it takes to change your attitude to make it happen?

Challenge: Do one thing to make you feel better, look better, or act better. Remember, it doesn’t have to be something big to make a big difference. Little bits add up!
